Here’s some good news for those who are no longer in their twenties and thirties. More and more Indians above the age of fifty are hitting the gym and are keen to build their bodies.
We all know about model-turned-actor Milind Soman, a regular at the Mumbai marathon and has an athletic body. He’s close to 50 (he doesn’t dye his hair else it would be difficult to believe that), but he admits that he’s not more of a gym person.
Most Mumbai-based enthusiasts feel building muscles at this age is just about focusing the mind over matter. And as per most fitness trainers, that’s true. For that age group, the challenge is to get them mentally fit first, before getting physically fit. Some of these people are really concerned about what others are going to say, and they need to be motivated gradually.
However, once they get some confidence, there’s no stopping them. There are some who just want to be strong and athletic, but then some of them are very serious about bodybuilding and are planning to enter the Mr Universe Masters contest as well. Most find bodybuilding fun, challenging and something which makes you feel good about yourself.
For those in the glamour world, its important for them to look good, but there are many more (not in the showbiz) who are taking up body building after the age of 50. This is definitely a great news, and if you’re one of them, or are in that age-group and intend to hit the gym, its always best to be cautious.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Don’t worry about what others would say, if you’re keen to get started
- Its better to focus more on repetitions and less on weight
- Make sure you get enough sleep
- Engage a Dietitian and don’t fiddle with your diet too much in order to bulk up
- After a certain age, your bones get weaker and injuries are more common, so keep that in mind
