International Yoga Day in India attracted several first-times (including several foreigners) from all walks of life.
After Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of an International Yoga Day in 2014 in the UN, it did not take too long for the entire world to take a cue from India.
“Yoga is one of the most precious gifts given by the ancient Indian sages to humankind. Yoga is not just a set of exercises that keeps the body fit. It is a passport to health assurance, a key to fitness and wellness”, Indian PM Modi.
On this International Yoga Day, yoga sessions took place worldwide, but because of lockdowns in various places, many did yoga indoors, in their balconies, or on the terraces.
In the past, people have observed Yoga day at landmark places including the Great Wall of China and the famed citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru.
In the past, Chinese lovers of yoga celebrated the ancient meditative physical practice in several places across the country, including the Great Wall in Badaling, near Beijing. This was the first time that a yoga programme was held on the monument.

There has been a lot of publicity about the event, so thousands of first-timers came out to learn yoga postures.
“It is great to be a part of a day that had received such overwhelming support at the United Nations. Now that I am going to stay in India for four years, I will surely try and learn yoga,” said Ekeroth from Denmark, who is in India as an intern.
Diplomats from various embassies also attended the various functions on the International Day of Yoga.
“I feel like my muscles and all have stretched. I had never felt like this before. I have learnt the few postures of the beginner’s level,” said Lili from Israel.
Disabilities also did not deter people from practicing yoga on International Yoga Day. Read more here…

Every year, on International Yoga Day, Indian prime minister Narendra Modi performs asanas and shares his yoga skills on social media. Many celebrities, industrialists, and even politicians join him on the day.
Several celebrities and ministers take this opportunity to display their yoga skills, and are often seen competing for the ‘fittest’ tag.
Most senior ministers are fitness-conscious, and have been doing yoga for about 20-30 minutes every day, for the past several years.
“Yoga is part of RSS training, so those with a Sangh background will be rooted in it. It’s not like only RSS members practice yoga, even non-BJP leaders are into it,” said an RSS’s spokesperson in Delhi.
