Eggs are excellent sources of protein, however the consumption of eggs in India is lower than the global average.
India’s Agriculture Minister wants the domestic egg production to be increased three times (from the current level) in order to achieve nutritional security.
“The per capita availability of eggs is around 63 per year while it should be about 180 eggs per person according to National Nutrition Institute. We will have to treble eggs production to reach that level,” Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh.
There’s increased awareness about the nutritional benefits of eggs in India and its now offered in schools, colleges, old age homes and orphanages.
Indian government is now promoting poultry farming under the entrepreneurship development and employment generation schemes.
