If you are not one of those who like to spend time in the kitchen, then probably you may not know that there are several ways to get yourself injured in the kitchen.
Ask anyone who is in the food service industry and spends a lot of time in the kitchen, they would tell you that there are several ways that you can get injured in the kitchen – slips, falls, burns, scalds, cuts, etc. Our very own kitchen mandoline slicer, which is an immensely useful utensil, can be extremely dangerous if the proper safety precautions are not taken.
Here are some of the common causes of injury in the kitchen:
- Slipping on Something in the Kitchen (oil, water, etc.)
- Falling from a chair or a small stool, trying to remove something from the upper shelves
- Glass containers/jars falling and injury from the broken glass pieces
- Sharp lid edges on opened cans
- Things falling from the upper shelves in a Refrigerator (children need to be careful)
- Kitchen Fires
- Spilling Boiling Water
- Burning yourself while removing something from the Oven
- Cutting yourself while halving a Bagel
- Chopping a finger instead of your food on the cutting board.
- Grabbing the sharp edge of a knife or a slicer from the utensil drawer.
Here’s a nice video that identifies the most common food service-related injuries and also shows which are the best methods to prevent these injuries from happening.
