We Indian like to have tea, but most of us have it with milk and sugar. There are some who have tea without sugar, for its health benefits.
But if you want to really benefit from drinking tea, go in for green tea.
Difference between Green tea vs Herbal Tea
For most Indians, green tea and herbal means more or less the same thing, however there are a few basic differences between the two.
Green tea is a type of tea, derived from the plant “Camelia Sinensus”, whereas Herbal teas are really just “infusions” of any herb: flower, fruit, plant (that is not Camelia Sinensus), spices, etc. These herbs are added in water to produce a “tea” like beverage.
Some popular herbal teas include: Ginger tea, Hibiscus tea, Mint tea, Chamomile tea.
In India, people add milk and sugar to black tea; “Masala chai” is a slight variant of this type (Cardamom is added).
Benefits of Green Tea
People (especially in China) have been drinking green tea for the past thousands of years, for its health benefits.
Green tea is a great source of Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which increases the metabolic rate and helps burn more calories.
So yes, drinking green tea can help you to lose weight. It’s just that Indians are so used to drinking their regular tea (with sugar), many are just not able to switch over to green tea. However, the younger lot have been able to make the transition and that explains the rise in consumption of green/herbal tea in India (although not drastically).
How much Green Tea should you drink?
The amount of EGCG you get from green tea varies from 45-180 mg per bag. In order to get the EGCG you require, drink several cups of green tea each day. Green tea is also found as an extract that contains about 50 percent EGCG; the extract has a higher concentration of EGCG in comparison to that found in tea. You can opt for either.
