What to wear to a Yoga class
Wile the best yoga outfits will depend on what type of yoga class you’are attending, here are some suggestions.
- Wear something that is form-fitting, without being tight. Whatever shirt you chose, try practicing a range of motion in it before you eave the house – see you’re comfortable and that you’re not exposing more of your body .
- Wear a tank top (sleeve-less) to yoga. Because yoga poses involve lots of arm movement, you won’t have to worry about constantly pushing them out of your way and can instead instead on your poses. Avoid one with plunging neckline / low neckline as it will leave you exposed when you bend or twist into a new position.
- It gets extremely warm in a Bikram or Hot yoga class. Women can wear a sports bra in order to stay cool. Sports bras are typically categorized by impact level; a low-impact bra is fine. Men have the option of going shirtless to a Bikram yoga class.
- During summer, if you’re doing yoga outdoors, a swimsuit is also an option and perfectly acceptable, provided you’re comfortable wearing it.
- Wearing a t-shirt is also an option. Practice stretching, reaching, and bending to ensure the shirt is not too tight. In inversion poses, your shirt might slide up your abs, so either prepare to tuck it in during class, or wear a camisole underneath.
- You can also experiment with layers for less physical class (like Iyengar or Vinyasa). You can wear a lightweight sweatshirt over a tank top, will keep you warm at the beginning and end of class when there is less movement. You can always remove layers, if your body gets too hot.
Yoga Wear: Overview
When you’re in yoga class, you need to be comfortable as you perform the various poses and get into a variety of positions; the clothes that you wear should not restrict your movement, and more importantly they should stay on you. For that reason, its important to wear the right yoga clothing (a good top and bottom) to help you stay as flexible as possible during your Yoga session.
We all give importance to our appearance, and the same applies when you’re in the gym or in the yoga studio. Everybody wants to look as good as possible, rather than sweaty and messed up.
You can always go to one of the yoga classes, prior to the one you’ll be attending, to checkout what the participants wear, to get an idea. What you wear in the morning may differ from what you wear in the evening, what you may wear in one city could be different from what you may wear in another, so this is a practical way of discovering ‘common practice’ at your local gym/yoga studio.
Alternatively, when you sign up for the class, you may ask what you could wear or if there are any restrictions.
There are some who practice yoga in leotards, skin tight lycra ensembles that allow for maximum flexibility – so that’s an option if you’re brave enough for such exposure. If you’d rather be a little more covered, a baggy tee-shirt and stretchy leggings work well.
Whatever you wear, make ensure you can move freely, without any restrictive fabric, and it doesn’t reveal much, and you should be fine.
