Organic farming in India is becoming popular and getting a lot of attention these days. However, organic farming is yet to taste success in India.
Unlike regular farming, organic farming does not rob the soil of its nutrients nor does it degrade the soil over time. It does not require lot of external nutrients nor does it require additional water.
India has the most number of organic farmers in the world, however, the reality is that most of them are struggling financially. Limited market, rising costs, and unfriendly policies are affecting the growth of organic farming in India.
Did you know that Sikkim was recognised as India’s first organic state, back in 2018?
Challenges faced by Organic farmers in India:
- Organic produce is expensive which discourages customers so the market is not growing thus affecting sales.
- The existing certification systems for organic food in India (to certify that the food is organic) is time-consuming, cumbersome and also expensive.
- Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) is the Centre’s free certification programme for organic farmers in India. However, a 2018 report reveals that not many states in India are availing of this feature.
Government of India has launched Paramparagath Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) to encourage organic farming. Though consumers have been demanding organic products since a long time, the producer is often perplexed to take up organic agriculture as the system of getting certificate and establishing credibility is a complex phenomenon. To simplify the whole process, PKVY is launched by Govt. of India.
Despite the challenges, there are a lot of people in India who are attracted to organic farming.
