A hybrid of tennis and squash, the sport of Padel tennis has been moving up the popularity charts around Europe and the UK. In fact, the sport has superseded tennis and football as Spain’s most popular sport. It’s a social sport that is much easier and more fun to play. Spanish culture focuses on family time (a lot like the Indian society), so padel tennis is popular in Spain, and many feel the same can be replicated in India.
What is Padel (Paddle) Tennis
Paddle tennis is a game that has been adapted from tennis to suit smaller spaces. Compared to tennis, the court is smaller and has no doubles lanes. The net is lower and you have to serve underhand. Paddle tennis is played with a solid paddle (as opposed to a strung tennis racquet), and a softer tennis ball is used to play.
With space limitations, it’s difficult to pursue a leisure sport like tennis for long. “That’s why padel tennis works for India. Usually people in their late 40s switch to golf to avoid any sort of injury. Padel tennis can be played by anyone from an 18-year-old to an 80-year-old and they can compete with each other.
Bengaluru had the honour of getting the first Padel facility in India.
We also feel that Padel tennis can be a popular sport in India.
