One of the most frequently asked question to me was Erectile dysfunction (ED). This is a very sensitive topic, irrespective of race in men, since almost all men are very much holding their pride and esteem in their masculinity and would rarely open in front of their partners for this particular reason.
But if diagnosed and treated earlier, it could help them lead a very healthy life as not able to perform looks a very superficial term, but underlined issues could be more than it seems.
ED is the most common sex problem that affects as many as 30 million men per year, as per american urology studies. It is defined as trouble getting or keeping an erection that’s firm enough for sex and penetration.
Though it’s not rare for a man to have some problems with erections from time to time, due to various physical or emotional causes, ED that is progressive or happens routinely with sex is not normal, and it should be treated.
Lets have a look at some very common causes: ED can happen:
1. Most often when blood flow in the penis is limited or nerves are harmed, due to underlying disease.
2. As an early warning of a more serious illness, like: atherosclerosis (hardening or blocked arteries), heart disease, high blood pressure or high blood sugar from Diabetes.
Some studies have shown men with ED are at significant risk of getting a heart attack, stroke or circulatory problems in the legs.
ED also causes: Low self-esteem, Depression, Distress for the man and his partner.
ED can result from health problems, emotional issues, or from both. Some known risk factors are:
Being over age 50, but lately updated to 30
High blood sugar (Diabetes)
High blood pressure
Having cardiovascular diseases
Having high cholesterol
Smoking
Using drugs or drinking too much alcohol
Being obese
Lack of exercise
Let’s also not forget about testosterone, have mentioned about it later in this post.
Even though ED becomes more common as men age, growing old is not always going to cause ED. Some men stay sexually functional into their 80s. ED can be an early sign of a more serious health problem. Finding and treating the reason for ED is a vital first step.
Physical Causes of ED beside illnesses could also be due to surgery and or radiation for cancers in the lower abdomen or pelvis can cause ED. Treating prostate, colon-rectal or bladder cancer often leaves men with ED. Cancer survivors should see a Urologist.
Emotional Causes of ED:
Depression
Anxiety
Relationship conflicts
Stress at home or work
Stress from social, cultural or religious conflicts
Worry about sex performance
Diagnosis
Finding the cause of your ED will help direct your treatment options.
Treatment
A variety of options are there ranging from psycologic session to viagra to penile implants to testosterone therapy, which is now one of the leading cause of E.D
What is testosterone? A steroid hormone, responsible for performing sexual activities in men, to regulate sex drive (libido), bone mass, fat distribution, muscle mass and strength, and the production of red blood cells and sperm. … As men age, they often make less testosterone, and so they produce less estradiol as well. Testosterone supplements, shots are also advised in E.D.
1. This sensitive topic should be discussed very lightly with your partner, with smiling face and in complete privacy.
2. Don’t get furious if he is not able to perform, try to check his routine to look for underlying cause.
3. Day to day mood swings should be closely observed to check for depression or anxiety.
4. Some men get concious after bring father, let’s not forget that.
5. Work stress shouldn’t be ignored.
6. If screen time is increased, check if xxx is there and self satisfaction is the cause for lack of interest or no. Talk politely if this happens.
7. Choice of words should be carefully done so partner can open up nicely, else it will lead to fight.
8. Alcohol or nicotine use should be closely observed.
9. Routine health checks are necessary to rule out diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia.
10. Commitments beyond marriage should be checked
Besides the usual lifestyle-related causes, even stress can lower your libido and cause ED. Stress is often synonymous with physical conditions like obesity, heart disease, hypertension, etc. Simple lifestyle changes, regular exercises, getting enough sleep, taking some time off, and seeking professional help (in extreme cases) can help you get over stress-related ED.
In other cases, the problem can lie in your mind. Scores of porn viewings and urban myths give guys the idea that sex is supposed to be a certain way and when it doesn’t happen exactly like they saw onscreen it can affect them. It can lead to performance anxiety and snowball into a major self-esteem issue. The most important thing to remember is that sex is supposed to be simple and fun. Just be comfortable with what you’re doing, you really don’t need to strut like a porn star.
For most men, physical activity and eating habits are the main culprit, and you can see it for yourself. When you take a long break from exercising, you’ll experience more downturns. Take a break from the laptop/TV in the evening, use that time for exercising, and you’ll see much better results.
Erectile Dysfunction Affecting Indian Men At a Younger Age
Blame it on the diet, pollution, high sugar levels, or lack of exercise, but the fact is that Erectile Dysfunction(ED) is affecting more (and younger) Indian men.
A recent survey conducted suggests that 25% of Indian men below the age of 30 years are not being able to rise to the occasion. A decade ago, this number was only around five to seven percent.
Though erectile dysfunction is a common complaint in men over 40 years of age, health experts are alarmed that more younger men are now getting affected.
Common Culprits
Among the common culprits, the major ones are smoking and alcohol, in the case of these younger men. In older men, its obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and psychological reasons that are the major culprits. Diabetes is emerging as a leading cause of erectile dysfunction among Indian men, especially those above the age of 40 years.
In fact, ED is the first sign that you may be having heart diseases as the mechanism of blockage of arteries is the same in both the cases. So, ED should not be taken lightly.
Many young men resort to over-the-counter drugs such as Viagra, desi Viagras, and other brands of sildenafil citrate to cure their erectile dysfunction themselves, but then these drugs have side effects.
