Brown Eggs vs White Eggs: Is there any difference?
While brown eggs may not be available in all the stores near you, I’m sure you would have seen brown eggs in certain stores. So is there any difference between brown eggs and white eggs in taste, calories or in nutrient value?
When it comes to food, usually the rule is that brown is always better. Brown bread, wheat pasta, brown rice, brown sugar – they’re all considered healthier options compared to their white counterparts.
But what about brown eggs?
Most are aware that they are expensive, but are these healthier than white eggs?
The fact is that there is not much of a difference between the two.
“There is no real difference in nutritional value between brown and white eggs. Brown eggs have more Omega-3 fatty acids but the difference is almost negligible,” Tro V. Bui, a visiting fellow in animal science at Cornell University.
“There is no real difference between brown and white eggs in terms of nutritional value. But these days brown eggs are associated with being organic which might make them seem a healthier choice. But if the chicken was fed regular food then the eggs wouldn’t be organic,” Nutritionist Niharika Ahluwalia.
Brown is Expensive
White eggs are laid by white-feathered chickens with white or light-coloured earlobes while the brown ones are laid by brown-feathered chickens with red earlobes. You see more white eggs in the market than brown ones because breeding and raising white-feathered chickens is much cheaper.
Brown eggs cost more because they come from chickens that have a big appetite, they eat more and hence are expensive to maintain.
Tastes Different
Because the chickens are fed different diet, the taste of the egg also differs. If you were to feed both (brown and white chicken) the same kind of food, the difference in taste won’t be much. Also, the colour of the yolk in brown eggs is much darker because brown hens are usually fed a lot of corn.
So, you really don’t have to worry much about the colour of the egg; they all are provide great nutrition. If possible, find out more about the quality of chickens the egg comes from, rather than it’s colour.
Fake news on Social Media
When it comes to health and fitness, it’s important to know the facts, because most of the time, lot of junk gets spread nowadays (you have to beware of the universities of Whatsapp and Facebook).
Some time back, there was this piece of news that was floating around regarding how a man died because of consuming eggs and sweet bananas.
However, that news is fake, and no such incident has been reported anywhere.
Here’s the FAKE NEWS
A post doing the rounds on social media claims ‘Emergency News. Death of a young man after consuming egg and sweet banana. He died on the spot. After researching the cause of his death, they discovered that the mixture of the egg and the sweet banana in the stomach turns into a poison. For this reason, do not eat egg with sweet banana’.
This is indeed fake news because people have been eating banana and eggs for breakfast for ages, and never has anybody complained about any discomfort. In fact both are nutritious food and should be part of your daily diet.
