Looking to tap the lucrative Indian sports market, Japanese sports gear major Asics is on expansion mode in India. The company is setting up retail stores and stepping up presence through its distribution partners.
India has emerged as one of the most important markets for ASICS given the huge potential and growing demand for our products spanning running, sports, for gym and other fitness-related gear.
In India, Asics mostly sells running shoes and shoes for other sports such as tennis, cricket and even gyms. Running is the fastest growing category in sports in India so Asics is keen on popularising the sport. Asics shoes will compete with the likes of Nike and Adidas. Besides shoes, the company now also sells apparel in India.
“We spend a lot of time on the ground and need nothing but the best. The gel technology used in ASICS footwear is apt for everyday running and training as they are extremely comfortable and are designed for high performance,” Toom Moody, former Australian cricketer and coach of IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Asics had an exclusive distribution pact with Reliance Retail when it initially entered India but will now setup its own sales operations in India to tap the growing market in India. The change is intended to bolster sales of Asics products in India, which is a promising market and has a huge potential.
To promote its products, Asics has been sponsoring events like the Mumbai Marathon for which it is the official sponsor. The company also plans to increase its brand exposure by seeking opportunities in cricket.
