It seems you no longer need cows to produce cow milk, you can just brew it with yeast, just like beer (although its more complicated than that). A start company called Perfect Day tells us how its done.
Their “synthetic milk” will look and taste a lot like cow milk, and will have all the nutrients too.
Perfect Day was co-founded by Ryan Pandya and Perumal Gandh, two young scientists with a background in biomedical engineering.
But will it really taste like real milk?
Although vegans and lactose intolerant people have plant-based alternatives like soy milk and almond milk, they do not taste like real milk at all.
Ryan and Perumal were absolutely aware of that when they set out to make their synthetic milk. It may sound impossible, but the two feel otherwise and have used technology already exists.
“The way we’re doing that is the same way that proteins are made for a million other things today. The way proteins are made for medicine and multivitamins and laundry detergent—even proteins to help clean up stains and stuff—it’s all made the same way,” says Ryan.
