Serial entrepreneur and former UTV head Ronnie Screwvala wants to set up India’s official e-sports federation that will send Indian gaming teams for world majors.
Screwvala met minister of state for youth affairs and sports Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore to seek the government’s endorsement for the federation, which will aim to create a single internationally and nationally recognised body for India, and also shape the future of competitive gaming in India.
“We feel Indian players need to play in international tournaments, representing India. For that, we need a body, which is recognised. By forming a federation, athletes will get the government support they need to compete at global levels. Our meeting with the minister was very productive. He is absolutely supportive of our endeavour,” said Screwvala.
What is e-Sports?
E-Sports, also known as electronic sports, is a form of competition using video games (pro-gaming). eSports take the form of organized, multiplayer video game competitions, particularly between professional players. Games are now played across smartphones(mSports), PCs and consoles(e-sports).
e-Sports now functions like other professional sports leagues. Players are full-time professional players who are paid salaries by teams and trained by professional coaches. Professional teams are supported by sponsors and event organisers and operate the same way as major international football, basketball or cricket clubs.
Major e-sports tournaments attract large audiences at esports venues and viewers (both online and on TV). Players/teams can win multi-million-dollar prize pools at the top international tournaments.
Electronic Sports Scene in India
In the last couple of years, video games industry has taken a big time leap in India, and pro gamers are looking forward to making serious money using their skills.
While the Indian audience for e-sports may be small currently, compared to the global average, several companies are looking to change the scenario as e-sports may become an official Olympic sport (E-sports could actually be medal event at 2024 Olympics).
