Adidas Originals in India
When Adidas Originals was first launched in India, Adidas had to convince not just the retailers it had to convince even its Indi staff that it would work in India.
“If convincing outsiders was a tough task, the biggest challenge was to get Indian employees to back Originals. Nobody wants to wear white shoes in India was the common reason dished out. India is a dirty, dusty market. White doesn’t stand a chance was another lame excuse,” says Dave Thomas, Adidas India
“In the beginning, we could not even get a store on the ground floor of any mall Malls didn’t understand the brand as they perceived it to be another sports brand, and space on the first floor was what was on the table,” recalls Thomas.
Thomas, however, was not convinced and decided to go with his gut as even though Adidas Originals has its heritage in sport, it was more of a lifestyle brand.
And the bet has paid off for Adidas India, as you do see a lot of people wearing white shoes in India now.
How to identify a real Adidas product from a fake?
Here are a few pointers.
- Adidas is now manufactured in several cost-effective countries. So the “Made in” label may not necessarily have China. It can be other countries such as India, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and even Turkey.
- Check the original product on the official Adidas website. Zoom in the picture of the product (shoes, apparel, bag) and take a closer look at the materials. Originals have excellent quality whereas fakes have poor finish, unfinished seams, threads, etc. Even the inside of the shoes will be of inferior quality.
- Check for apps that can help you detect originals from fakes.
- The heel tag (the tiny triangle behind) used to be another way of identifying the real one but it seems Adidas stopped producing sneakers with heel tags back in 2004-2005.
- Lastly, in most cases, the original Adidas footwear will be heavier than the fake one.
