Most fitness trainers in Mumbai reveal that several of their clients join gyms to get ‘Popeye arms’, with few concentrating on working out their legs. After all, if you see Bollywood (and even Hollywood) celebrities endorsing any product, its always their arms & biceps that gets shown on the screen.
No wonder that very few are then bothered to workout their lower body. Have you closely observed Shahid Kapoor? Most trainers refer to this attitude (of only focusing on the upper body) as the Shahid syndrome.
For most men, working out means acquiring a body they can show off, and it means their chest, back, arms and abdominal muscles, and that’s where they concentrate all the time.
But then, concentrating only on biceps and abs, and ignoring quadriceps (the muscle group in the front of the thigh) can alter the body’s centre of gravity, which means you can lose your balance easily, increasing the chances of injury.
Most fitness trainers recommend that a man’s upper and lower body workout ratio, should be 60:40, instead of the current 80:20.
